The case stemmed from a contentious divorce and custody battle with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, whose wealthy South Florida family allegedly orchestrated the killing to resolve the dispute. Hitmen Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera carried out the shooting for $100,000, connected through intermediary Katherine Magbanua, who dated Wendi's brother, Charlie Adelson. Garcia was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019, Rivera pleaded guilty and testified against others, and Magbanua was convicted in a 2022 retrial.
