Saylor Hayes: Tracker Left in Virginia, Body Found in South Carolina

Saylor Hayes, a 5-year-old nonverbal autistic girl, was reported missing from a Pawleys Island, South Carolina rental on August 30th, 2026. Her body was found in nearby water the next morning. Parents John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were arrested in Tennessee and charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk / willfully abandoning a child. They have waived extradition to South Carolina.

Warrants allege Saylor was left unsupervised about 15 meters from water, that her Project Lifesaver tracker was left in Virginia, and that her parents directed searchers toward that tracker and away from the water. Cause of death is pending autopsy. Both are presumed innocent.
