Sixteen months into Donald Trump's second term and every cabinet member, every appointee, every hearing on Capitol Hill follows the same script: blame Joe Biden. Pam Bondi did it before she was fired. Cash Patel does it. Pete Hegseth does it repeatedly. Now Trump's HUD secretary did it under questioning from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who pressed him hard and got nowhere. This is not coincidence. This is a strategy that flows straight from the top.
Meanwhile, President Xi called the United States a nation in decline. Trump fired back on Truth Social within minutes, insisting Xi was referring to the Biden years. Gas is pushing five dollars a gallon. Groceries are up. Electric bills are up. Water bills are up. Inflation is outpacing wages for the first time in three years. At what point does any of this become Trump's responsibility?
Then there is the Iran war. No credible intelligence analyst, domestic or foreign, supported the claim that Iran was close to obtaining nuclear weapons. That was the justification. Now the Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed, Iran has retained roughly 90% of its missile capabilities after two months of sustained bombing, and mobile launchers on the backs of semi trucks have become a real tactical problem. Tom Nichols, a longtime War College professor and Atlantic contributor, says Trump privately wants out but has no path to declaring victory.
The World Cup is coming to the United States. Opening game tickets start at four thousand dollars. The championship is sixteen thousand. Post Malone and Jelly Roll just cancelled a stadium tour because fans cannot afford it. FIFA priced out its own audience. These stadiums are going to be half empty.
A nation in decline, entirely self-inflicted.
