Donald Trump is moving to create a $1.776 billion fund — a number chosen deliberately — to financially compensate January 6th participants, including members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers who were convicted of violent crimes and later pardoned. Hawk walks through exactly what that means and who stands to benefit from it.
Two pardoned J6 defendants are back in the news. Ryan Nichols, a former Marine who openly bragged about bringing violence to the Capitol, was re-arrested in Texas on a deadly conduct charge after allegedly brandishing a firearm at an unarmed man holding a Bible outside a church. Andrew Paul Johnson, who tweeted "free at last" after receiving his pardon, was just sentenced to life in prison in Florida for the repeated sexual abuse of two children — an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl — and allegedly used the promise of Trump payout money to try to silence them.
Hawk then replays a WUSA Channel 9 documentary overview of January 6th, 2021, pausing throughout to provide context on key moments: Dominic Pizzola of the Proud Boys smashing the first Capitol window with a stolen police shield, Officer Michael Fanone being dragged into the crowd, tased in the neck and hospitalized, Officer Eugene Goodman's heroism, the ransacking of the Senate chamber, and the shooting of Ashley Babbitt.
Former DOJ prosecutor and Mueller team member Andrew Weissmann called the $1.776 billion fund one of the most corrupt things he has ever encountered. Hawk breaks down why the fund may not even be legally possible — and what it signals about Trump's intentions heading into the midterms.
Farmers are going bankrupt at a 46% higher rate than last year. Grocery prices are spiking. People are losing jobs. And the plan is to hand $1.8 billion to convicted criminals who attacked police officers.
