Graham Platner is the Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine, set to face off against Susan Collins, and the campaign against him is already underway. Republicans have reportedly earmarked $50 million specifically to defeat Platner, and the strategy has nothing to do with his current policy positions.
Washington Post opinion writer Marc Thiessen and Mediaite columnist Isaac Schorr are among the media voices already pushing hit pieces. Schorr recently published a headline attacking Platner over comments made in 2019, accompanied by a photo highlighting a Totenkopf tattoo. The article centers on Reddit posts Platner made after returning from combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Platner, a Purple Heart recipient and combat veteran, spoke at length about his military service in a 90-minute interview on the New York Times podcast The Daily. He addressed his PTSD, the difficulty of returning from war, and the anger he carried in the years following his deployments. He acknowledged the Reddit posts directly, describing where his head was during that period of his life.
Susan Collins, who has held her Senate seat for 30 years, is best known by many for casting the deciding vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court after assuring constituents that Roe v. Wade was settled law. The coming Maine Senate race looks less like a debate over 2026 issues and more like a six-month excavation of a veteran's worst years.
