Hawk breaks down a deepening crack forming inside the Republican Party as Donald Trump's approval rating sinks to 35% in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll - the lowest of his second term - driven by a loss of support among non-MAGA Republicans.
Trump has used his iron grip on the MAGA base to oust incumbent Republicans across the country in 2025 primaries. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana was removed after voting to impeach Trump for January 6th. Six-term Congressman Thomas Massie was bounced from his Kentucky seat after pushing for the release of the Epstein files. In Indiana, Trump eliminated five Republican state senators who refused to support his redistricting agenda.
The problem: primary electorates and general electorates are two very different animals. The hardened MAGA faithful who show up in primaries represent a narrow slice of voters. Those newly installed candidates now face a general electorate at a time when Trump's approval rating hovers in the low-to-mid 30s and could fall further by November.
Meanwhile, the economic pressures hitting everyday Americans are mounting. Small farm bankruptcies are up 46% year over year. Farmers are being crushed by tariffs and can't afford fertilizer or diesel. Gas prices are climbing past $7 a gallon in California, and are expected to top $6 nationwide by the Fourth of July. Eighty percent of Americans - across party lines - place the blame squarely on Trump.
A president polling in the high 20s or low 30s on election day doesn't have coattails. He has an anchor.
