Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche walked into a closed-door meeting with all 53 Senate Republicans to defend Trump's $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, and walked out having convinced almost no one. Nearly 25 Republican senators voiced opposition to the fund during a nearly two-hour meeting described by those inside the room as incredibly hostile. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated publicly he wants the fund eliminated entirely.
Senator Thom Tillis called it "stupid on stilts." Susan Collins made clear she does not support reimbursing individuals convicted of violence against police officers on January 6th. Shortly after the meeting ended, Thune adjourned the Senate until June. One Republican senator texted a reporter saying, "Our majority is melting down before our eyes."
Hawk weighs in on the insurrectionist compensation fund, the Republican revolt in the Senate, and what it means that nearly half the GOP caucus is openly opposed to one of Trump's signature agenda items. The Senate parliamentarian had already blocked a billion dollars for Trump's ballroom from the reconciliation bill, and now this fund faces mounting legal challenges, including a lawsuit filed by two Capitol Police officers who were physically assaulted on January 6th seeking to terminate the fund and claw back Treasury deposits. Michael Cohen and Jim Acosta have both said they qualify for reimbursement. Stephen Miller, meanwhile, called $1.8 billion a small measure of the justice insurrectionists are owed.
