Regretful Trump voters are showing up all over social media upset that tariffs, the Iran war, and economic chaos are hitting their wallets — but accountability for what they actually voted for remains nowhere in sight. Mass deportations, the gutting of DEI, the erasure of Black history from the military and NASA, attacks on abortion access and birth control, anti-trans policies, homophobia — all of it was on the ballot, and they checked the box.
Hawk revisits a focus group episode from last July or August where a woman with a permanent disability laid out in striking detail how her entire life — her housing, her Medicaid, her medications, her kids' education benefits — depended on the exact federal programs being gutted by the Big Beautiful Bill. She acknowledged the cuts would make her and her children homeless. She acknowledged she would lose access to the medical care she needs to survive. And then she said she appreciated what Donald Trump was doing to take away medical care from trans kids.
The Big Beautiful Bill slashed $900 billion from Medicaid and $30 billion from SNAP benefits to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest 1%. Republican voters are among those losing those benefits.
When voices on the left call for welcoming regretful MAGA voters back into the fold, Hawk returns to that woman. She hadn't regretted her vote then. She might now. But the hatred that drove it? That's probably still there.
