The Delaney ICE Detention Center in New Jersey, run by private prison company GEO Corporation, has become the center of a national crisis. Over 300 detainees have launched a hunger and labor strike over conditions that include maggots in the food, undrinkable water, multiple suicides, and at least 18 reported deaths.
New Jersey Senator Andy Kim confirmed the water conditions firsthand after being allowed inside, only to be pepper-sprayed upon exiting. Congressman Rob Mendez has been repeatedly blocked from entering despite a statutory right to inspect the facility at any time. Governor Mikey Cheryl also attempted access and was turned away.
Protesters have gathered daily outside the facility, including TikTok activists King Triv and Adam Cray. King Triv was arrested and hospitalized after being beaten. When state police moved in with riot gear and horses, the violence escalated. MSNBC journalist Ali Velshi was on the ground and was forcibly moved far enough away by New Jersey State Police that he could no longer report on the story, raising serious First Amendment concerns.
Detainees who have signed self-deportation orders are still being held because GEO Corporation profits from their detention. Steven Miller and Tom Homan are named as the primary architects of these policies.
