Rick Chow, a South Carolina convenience store owner, was acquitted of murder in the shooting death of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, a Black teenager he chased 130 yards before shooting in the back. Cyrus had emptied his pockets and opened his jacket to prove he stole nothing. The jury still said not guilty.
Hawk, a self-described white guy from rural Ohio who spent 25 years in the Bay Area, reflects on what this verdict reveals about race in America, the criminal justice system, and the people online rushing to defend the shooting of a child.
The right's knee-jerk reaction to excuse the killing, the comparison to Kyle Rittenhouse, and the inconvenient fact that this was Rick Chow's third time firing a weapon at someone all get the scrutiny they deserve. The prosecution's failures, the pattern of acquittals in the South, and 400 years of Black Americans being killed with impunity are part of the conversation here.
