Hawk covers the Miami Herald's new exclusive profile of Michael Reiter, the former Palm Beach Police Chief who led the original Jeffrey Epstein investigation from 2003 to 2007. The article, written by journalist Julie K. Brown and published June 6, 2026, is the first time Reiter has sat down to address the case in years.
Palm Beach detectives Joe Recarey and Michael Reiter built a case that resulted in a draft DOJ indictment with roughly 30 to 40 felony counts that could have sent Epstein to prison for 24 life sentences. Instead, U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta negotiated a sweetheart plea deal in 2007 that gave Epstein 13 months in a local jail with daily work release, during which he continued to abuse victims.
Hawk names the Bush administration officials who oversaw that outcome: Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, who was Acosta's direct supervisor, and President George W. Bush. Neither has been questioned about the Epstein case. Hawk calls on Congress to subpoena Alberto Gonzalez immediately.
