As America marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Hawk raises the question that a lot of people are quietly sitting with: what exactly is there to celebrate this July 4th?
Trump's America 250 event on the White House South Lawn has seen every major musical act bail, no A-list Hollywood participation, and a UFC outdoor arena going up where a national celebration was supposed to be. Meanwhile the real story is the state of the country itself.
Hawk runs through the record: a president who is a convicted felon, an adjudicated rapist found liable for massive fraud, who allegedly sold pardons, incited a violent insurrection to block the transfer of power, and is now using the DOJ, the FBI, and figures like Kash Patel and Pam Bondi as instruments against political enemies. Two million children have been removed from Medicaid. Immigration detainees are held in facilities with no due process, no attorneys, and reported maggots in the food.
The founding fathers themselves were deeply contradictory figures. George Washington was the largest slaveholder in the colonies. Thomas Jefferson owned and raped a 14-year-old Sally Hemings. The country was built on slavery and the slaughter of Native Americans. That history does not disappear because it is inconvenient.
So what are we celebrating? Hawk wants to know what he is missing.
