The Rush reunion tour opened June 7th at the LA Forum, the same venue where they last played with Neil Peart 11 years ago. Hawk was there for night one with VIP tickets, and the merch and ticketing conversation is one that a lot of fans are already having.
Ticket prices were among the highest Hawk has ever paid for a concert. Then came the merch table: $50 t-shirts, $60 to $80 jerseys, button-up baseball jerseys over $100, and hoodies pushing $120. There were four or five different VIP tiers, each named after a Rush song, from Stick It Out at the bottom to Closer to the Heart at the top.
The bottom tier VIP package came with a leather toiletry bag and a Yeti mug. As Hawk put it, Rush knows their audience: Gen X fans who are probably hauling around prescription bottles and need a quality mug to go with them. Higher tier VIP holders got access to the Xanadu Lounge and a full merch bag with a tour program and poster.
The VIP line ran over an hour long, with thousands of people in it, which made the "exclusive" experience feel a little less exclusive. None of that stopped it from being one of the best shows Hawk has ever seen.
