Hawk spent 28 years as a trial attorney and has been through jury selection many times. That experience informs his take on the Karmelo Anthony conviction and why he believes there are serious grounds for appeal.
Karmelo Anthony was a 17-year-old Black football player in Texas who stabbed and killed one of two white brothers who physically confronted and assaulted him. He was convicted. The parents of the boy who was killed were personal friends with both the judge and the prosecutor. There are photos on the father's Facebook page of the three of them socializing together. Neither the judge nor the prosecutor recused themselves from the case.
On top of that, the prosecutor who was friends with the victim's father struck every potential Black juror from the panel. In Hawk's 28 years of trial experience, the combination of those two facts alone represents substantial grounds for appeal.
Hawk also encourages white viewers to seek out Black creators covering this case, listen without commenting, and resist the urge to tone police or announce that they voted for Kamala Harris.
