Two days before the Iran memorandum of understanding is set to be signed, the Trump administration still has not released its text. It was leaked to a Saudi Arabian news agency. Hawk calls it a complete and total surrender, and lays out why he believes the deal will be dead within a week.
The 14-point MOU calls for an immediate ceasefire including in Lebanon, but Israel was not party to the negotiations and is not named in the agreement. Israel is currently the one conducting military operations in southern Lebanon and has no obligation under this deal to stop. The day the agreement was announced, Israel launched a massive wave of airstrikes into Beirut, which the Iranians said could kill the deal entirely.
Beyond the ceasefire, the MOU strengthens Iran economically and diplomatically, leaves the IRGC intact, does not address Iran's nuclear program or missile stockpiles, and funnels hundreds of billions of dollars into the country. Every Gulf state, having learned that American military protection cannot be counted on, will now be forced to establish independent diplomatic and economic ties with Iran to protect access through the Strait of Hormuz. That further isolates Israel, which can no longer rely on Gulf state relationships if Iran attacks again.
Trump flinched when there was no quick regime change and when gas prices spiked at home. The IRGC dug in harder. Netanyahu's gamble in convincing Trump to join this war has backfired completely, and Iran emerges from it stronger than when the war began.
