With Trump's Iran deal now under the microscope, Hawk revisits one of the most durable right-wing talking points of the last 11 years: the claim that Barack Obama sent $1.7 billion in taxpayer cash on pallets to Iran as part of the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement. Republican politicians and right-wing media ran with that narrative for over a decade. The actual fact-check on that claim has now come from an unlikely source: Tucker Carlson.
In a clip featured in the video, Carlson explains the real history of the payment. It traced back to the 1970s, when the Shah of Iran, then America's largest purchaser of military hardware, paid for weapons that were never delivered after the Iranian Revolution and the 1979 hostage crisis. Iran took the United States to the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague, and the U.S. was on track to lose. The Obama administration settled the debt as part of the JCPOA. The original sum was $400 million; with decades of accrued interest it reached $1.7 billion. The only reason it moved as physical cash was that U.S. sanctions had frozen every Iranian bank account, making a wire transfer legally impossible.
The contrast with Trump's current framework is stark. Under Trump's deal, Iran stands to receive approximately $400 billion, including $100 billion in previously frozen Iranian assets and a $300 billion reconstruction fund guaranteed by the United States government. The same political movement that spent 11 years calling Obama's court-ordered $1.7 billion settlement a national betrayal has gone quiet.
