Following the Supreme Court's 6 to 3 ruling affirming the Trump administration's ability to strip Temporary Protected Status from 1.3 million legal immigrants, Republican Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a statement urging the administration to reconsider. DeWine and the mayor of Springfield, Ohio, had previously invited Haitian immigrants to settle in the community, where they have lived and worked for over a decade, filling manufacturing jobs that local residents were not taking, opening businesses and restaurants, and staffing healthcare and Alzheimer's care facilities that serve the broader community.
Hawk walks through what the TPS ruling means in immediate practical terms: work permits expired overnight, driver's licenses were immediately invalidated, and affected immigrants can no longer legally work, drive, or operate businesses. They are now deportable without further process or due process of any kind. DeWine called the potential mass deportation of Springfield's Haitian community an absolutely devastating outcome and said plainly that it is not in Ohio's self-interest.
Hawk points out that the administration's response to a Republican governor making that argument reveals exactly what is actually driving the policy. He addresses Stephen Miller's documented statements about his vision for a United States populated by far fewer people who do not look like him, and frames the TPS decision not as an immigration enforcement matter but as straightforward racism and bigotry directed at Black and brown people who were in this country legally.
