A Politico report published Monday details an allegation of sexual assault against Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner from a woman who recounted the 2021 incident in extensive detail. Platner has denied the allegations. Hawk, a former trial attorney, read the full article and explains why the account struck him as credible, while making clear that finding an allegation credible is not the same as declaring it proven true.
Hawk responds to two things he saw in the comments of a Bulwark live discussion hosted by Tim Miller and Sarah Longwell. First, commenters dismissing the allegations outright without having read the reporting, many of them insulting the woman who came forward. Second, commenters invoking innocent until proven guilty, a standard that applies to a criminal trial and not to a Senate campaign where Maine voters weigh credibility on their own.
Hawk argues the left should not become a party that defends men facing credible allegations, drawing a contrast with Republican support for candidates accused of similar conduct. With fifteen years left on the Maine statute of limitations and a deadline for the Democratic Party to substitute a candidate against Susan Collins, Hawk says Platner needs to withdraw from the race.
