Overnight, Donald Trump fired the two remaining Democratic members of the bipartisan Election Assistance Commission, Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland, after one Republican resigned in April and another was allowed to resign, leaving all four seats vacant. Hawk starts from an honest place, admitting he had to research what the commission is before reacting, and walks through what he learned from Just Security.
The EAC was created by the Help America Vote Act in 2002 after the 2000 election. As Hawk explains, it is an advisory body: it certifies voting equipment, shares best practices, and distributes election security grants, but it cannot force or restrict states from doing anything, since the Constitution gives states control over elections and the president essentially none. He notes the firings trace directly to the Supreme Court's Trump v. Slaughter decision on removing commissioners without cause.
Hawk's take is that this single move is likely inconsequential for the 2026 midterms, but troubling in context. He connects it to Trump's mail-in ballot executive orders, the SAVE Act, the quashed Fulton County subpoena, and Judge Indira Talwani voiding much of Trump's ballot order, describing a president testing every lever he can find.
