The night before Todd Blanche's Senate Judiciary confirmation hearing to become Attorney General, a New York Times story by Glenn Thrush lands with 352 pages of internal DOJ emails, obtained by the watchdog group American Oversight and shared with the paper. Hawk's view is that Blanche is genuinely qualified on paper, a former line prosecutor and trial attorney, which is exactly what makes his conduct worse: he has kept acting as Donald Trump's personal lawyer while running the department.
The emails center on Ed Martin Jr., the right-wing lawyer pushed out as acting U.S. Attorney for D.C. and then parked at DOJ headquarters to run the weaponization working group. Blanche wrote "I am frustrated" within a month, set up weekly check-ins, and reassigned investigative lanes to his own deputies. Hawk covers Martin's role in the Letitia James mortgage case, the January 6th review, and the Biden auto pen probe, complete with a look at what an auto pen actually is.
Along the way Hawk plays Andrew Weissmann on the one question he would ask Blanche, revisits Emil Bove's judicial confirmation hearing, and covers the Epstein grand jury transcripts, Tina Peters, and Blanche's defenders who argue he is a check on worse actors.
