Hawk plays the clips that mattered from the Todd Blanche and Jay Clayton confirmation hearings. Both men are qualified on paper, which in Hawk's view makes it worse: they treat the roles of Attorney General and Director of National Intelligence as extensions of the Oval Office. The moment that lands hardest is Blanche answering a question about who he represents by saying he is Trump's lawyer, then walking it back. Federal prosecutors appear in court for the United States, and Hawk argues the first answer is the honest one.
Jay Clayton, questioned by Jon Ossoff and then Mark Warner, gets as close as any Trump nominee has to acknowledging 2020, allowing that Biden won the Electoral College and that Congress certified it, while still avoiding the popular vote. Hawk notes the pattern across every nominee for a year and a half.
The real news is John Cornyn. Pressed on the roughly $1.8 billion settlement fund, Blanche did not reassure him, and Cornyn told CNN's Manu Raju he is truly undecided, with Thom Tillis wanting the fund fully dead. On an 11-10 Judiciary Committee, one Republican no vote ends it. Hawk also covers the judge who called the underlying case a fraud on the court.
