Liz Oyer was the Justice Department's pardon attorney, responsible for reviewing clemency applications and making recommendations. According to her account, within hours of Todd Blanche being confirmed as deputy attorney general last year, he contacted her about restoring firearms rights to Mel Gibson, who lost them following a domestic violence conviction. She declined, citing that domestic violence is a leading cause of homicide for women and that the risk rises sharply when an abuser has a gun. She was fired shortly after.
This week, Blanche described those events differently in his confirmation testimony. Yesterday Oyer appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee and testified, under oath and in an open hearing room, that the likely incoming Attorney General of the United States lied to them. Hawk plays her testimony and makes the case that she is taking a real risk in doing so.
He connects it to the January 6th committee, where a majority of those willing to testify about Trump's conduct were women, and covers the related threads: the judge referring Blanche to the New York bar over the IRS settlement, the audit-exemption addendum, and Blanche's testimony that a president may direct prosecutions.
