Roughly 50 million dollars is flowing into the Michigan Democratic Senate primary between Haley Stevens and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, and Hawk digs into where it comes from and whether it is working. Of that total, a reported 30 million comes from AIPAC, spent to support Stevens over El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit health director who is Muslim and has been sharply critical of the Israeli government.
Hawk frames this as a test case. Stevens has positioned herself as a full supporter of US aid to Israel, while El-Sayed represents the growing share of Democratic voters, especially those under 40, who want to condition or reduce that support. Michigan, with the large Arab American and Palestinian American community in Dearborn, is where that divide is sharpest, and Hawk argues the spending shows how these groups read the electorate.
The through line is whether money can override where voters actually are. Hawk points to the recent California governor's primary, where Tom Steyer spent enormous sums of his own money and still finished third, and notes El-Sayed currently leads Stevens in the polling. His hope is that Michigan becomes another example of heavy outside spending failing to move a primary.
