Hawk reads through and reacts to a new Atlantic essay by Franklin Foer titled How Netanyahu Lost America, which argues that Israel's standing in US politics has collapsed largely through choices made by its longest-serving prime minister. Hawk shares the piece because it maps a shift he has watched for years: support for Israel moving from a bipartisan reflex to a partisan liability.
Foer traces the arc from Netanyahu's early career as Israel's telegenic salesman on American television to a premiership in which, the essay argues, he treated persuasion as futile. Hawk walks through the key beats: the 2015 speech to Congress against Obama's Iran deal arranged without informing the White House, the open preference for Republicans, the embrace of Trump, and the naming of Trump Heights. He notes the polling now shows a majority of Americans holding an unfavorable view of the Israeli government, with especially steep declines among voters under 45 and young evangelicals.
Hawk adds his own commentary throughout, including where he disagrees with Foer, and connects it to the Iran war, the erosion of AIPAC's influence, and the growing number of Democrats declining its support. He is candid about his own strong views on the current Israeli government while recommending the article and an Atlantic subscription.
