Hawk returns to a case he has followed closely: the death of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old who had just graduated high school with a football scholarship. On July 4th, Wells went by boat to Horn Island off the Mississippi coast with a group of friends. He was reported missing, and his body was found roughly 40 hours later after the group returned without him.
The case has been marked by unusual developments. Hawk recounts the reporting that those on the trip deactivated their social media in the immediate aftermath, that the family retained attorney Benjamin Crump and arranged a second independent autopsy that was complicated by missing tissue, and that questions have been raised about the local investigation. He is careful to note that what happened is not known and that these are open questions, not conclusions.
The new development is an analysis of the officially released 911 audio by an audio engineer, Janetta Brantley, whose breakdown is circulating widely on TikTok. Hawk plays her full video, in which she isolates the background of the call and offers her interpretation of what can be heard, and stresses it is her analysis. He reflects on how the interviews some participants have given could become admissible, extends his sympathy to the family, and hopes the investigation delivers answers.
