Part one ran out of time, so here is the rest of it. Less about drums this time and more about the generation that produced the guy known as Hawk.
The contradiction Hawk keeps coming back to is being raised by adults who told him to be himself, then pulled up short the moment he actually was. Encouragement and correction that never quite lined up, absorbed over fifteen or sixteen years and carried well into adulthood.
A lot of Gen X grew up with parents who were checked out in one way or another, figure it out on your own kinda thing. Sometimes that worked. Often it did not, and the people pleasing that came out of it turns out to be remarkably hard to put down.
What changes in your fifties, in his telling, is that it finally doesn't matter so much. This is who he is. People are welcome to it or they are not, and both are fine.
