Kristen Welker had Hakeem Jeffries on Meet the Press, and Hawk's read is that almost nothing got a direct answer. The one that stood out was Medicare for All.
Jeffries authored or cosponsored single payer legislation on a near annual basis from 2013 through 2021. Asked whether he still supports it, he moved to describing problems in the system and the Medicaid and SNAP cuts in the Republican bill. Welker pressed. He did not say yes.
That lands against a health system Hawk describes as the worst he has seen, where the difference between coverage and catastrophe is luck. It also lands the same week as research putting the savings from universal coverage in the range of a trillion dollars annually, alongside tens of thousands of preventable deaths.
The stakes are about January. If Democrats take the House, Jeffries expects the Speaker's gavel, and Speakers decide what reaches the floor. Hawk's question is what a leader who will not restate an old position brings to a vote.
His read on Chuck Schumer's standing in the Senate is different.
