Tim Curry died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, at the age of 80. His manager confirmed the news. No cause was given.
Hawk wanted to mark it, because Curry was one of those actors who could walk into anything and make it his.
He broke through as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and never looked back. Wadsworth in Clue, playing the whole cast off one another. Pennywise in the original It, which quietly ruined clowns for a generation. Long John Silver opposite the Muppets. A voice career deep enough to fill its own tribute, from cartoons to video games. Three Tony nominations, for Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Spamalot.
A stroke in 2012 changed how he worked, and he kept working, mostly with his voice, right through it.
What set him apart was the commitment. Curry never winked at the audience or held a character at arm's length. He went all the way in, every time, and made the strange and theatrical feel completely his own.
Rest in peace to a genuine original.
