Hawk walks through a chaotic week of legal whiplash over Donald Trump's executive order on mail-in ballots and voting by mail. The order directs the DOJ, DHS, and the Postal Service to build a federal list of eligible voters and restrict which ballots get delivered ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
On Monday the Supreme Court lifted one of two injunctions, ruling that the challenge was premature because the Postal Service rule had not been finalized. Hawk pushes back hard on the coverage, arguing the media reported that the ruling said things it never said. In Massachusetts, Judge Indira Talwani lifted both injunctions to stay consistent with the high court, then issued a fresh nationwide injunction once the rule was drafted, blocking the order again.
The story shifts to Shasta County and Redding, California, deep red Trump country where local officials still call vote by mail fraudulent. There, registrar Clint Curtis wants to bring on Tina Peters, the former Colorado clerk convicted of election tampering whose sentence was commuted by Governor Jared Polis, as an election consultant.
