When the Trump administration surged thousands of ICE and Border Patrol agents into Minneapolis in January 2025, the occupation was impossible to ignore for residents living near George Floyd Square. Lizzie, a Minneapolis community organizer and TikTok creator, was doing street patrols and monitoring ICE activity on January 21st — the day after her birthday — when she came face to face with federal agents in a residential neighborhood. She never got out of her car. She never said a word to them. Minutes later, her window was smashed, she was pulled from the vehicle, handcuffed, and placed in a Jeep Wagoneer packed with beef jerky wrappers, with agents who didn't know how to use their key cards or find the Whipple federal building without her help.
Detained for nearly eight hours without being read her rights, fingerprinted, or told why she was being held, Lizzie describes the chaos and incompetence inside the Whipple detention center, including agents discussing how to get a confession before a lawyer was requested — loud enough to hear through the cell door. Two and a half weeks later, she received a call from the National Lawyers Guild: federal charges under 18 USC 111 were being filed. She self-surrendered the next morning.
Hawk breaks down what 18 USC 111 actually requires, why the vast majority of these Minneapolis cases were dismissed, and why 75% of the Minneapolis-St. Paul U.S. Attorney's Office staff quit rather than prosecute them. The charges against Lizzie were dropped — without prejudice — on the morning of her court date.
Also covered: Border Patrol chief Mike Banks resigning amid sex tourism allegations, the targeting of protesters under domestic terrorism labels, the community networks that mobilized around ICE activity, and what Tom Homan is promising for deportations in the coming fiscal year.
