Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim doctor running for the open Michigan Senate seat, was in third place for months. After campaigning with Hassan Piker, a new Mitchell Research Group poll shows him at 28 points, a full 10 points ahead of his nearest corporate DNC establishment rivals Haley Stevens and Mallory McMorrow. Hawk lays out exactly why that matters and what it reveals about the Democratic Party's relationship with its own base.
80 to 90 percent of Democratic voters want AIPAC out of politics, want an end to funding a genocide in Gaza, want universal health care, livable wages, a higher federal minimum wage, and protected voting rights. Those are not fringe positions. Those are the base. Yet the party's response, in Hawk's view, is essentially "who else are you going to vote for?"
Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Chris Coons, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Richie Torres, and Dan Goldman are among the Democrats named for their continued support of Israel and AIPAC-aligned positions. Meanwhile, the centrist Third Way organization has announced plans to spend 30 to 50 million dollars targeting progressive Democrats, not Republicans, over the next two and a half years, coordinating with sitting House and Senate members.
The Democratic Party's national approval rating sits below 25 percent. El-Sayed's sudden lead in Michigan is, according to Hawk, exactly what happens when a candidate actually reflects what the base believes.
