The FBI ballistics report in the Charlie Kirk murder case has been widely misrepresented across social media. The report did not conclude that the bullet found at the scene was not fired by the rifle owned by Tyler Robinson, the man charged with Charlie Kirk's killing. The FBI ballistics analysis was simply inconclusive, meaning investigators could not definitively tie the bullet to the rifle, nor could they rule it out. The bullet may have been too degraded from impact to allow for a complete forensic match either way.
Hawk walks through the legal analogy of a not-guilty verdict, which does not equal a finding of innocence, to explain why an inconclusive ballistics result is not the same as exoneration. The case is currently set for a preliminary hearing in May, and the defense representing Tyler Robinson has requested a six-month delay to properly assess what the inconclusive ballistics report means for their case.
The information blackout surrounding the Charlie Kirk assassination has fueled a wide range of conspiracy theories on both the left and right.
