The National Guard shooting in Washington DC involves 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal from Bellingham, Washington, an Afghan individual who entered the country in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome. Lakanwal worked with the CIA in Kandahar, Afghanistan and applied for asylum in 2024. In April 2025, the Trump administration Department of Homeland Security under Christine Noem granted him asylum after thorough vetting by the FBI and multiple agencies.
Two National Guardsmen from West Virginia, ages 20 and 24, remain in critical condition after the Thanksgiving eve shooting. The Department of Homeland Security now claims unvetted Afghans are problematic despite their own approval process. Afghanistan fell after Donald Trump released 5,000 Taliban fighters and senior leadership in one of his final presidential acts, creating the crisis that forced Afghan allies of US troops to flee. The Taliban deal excluded the Afghan government entirely. These Afghan individuals served alongside American forces and helped keep US troops alive during operations in Kandahar and throughout Afghanistan.
The suspect drove from Washington state on Thanksgiving eve to shoot National Guardsmen while the Trump administration faces controversies including Epstein files, Venezuela policy, Russian wishlist proposals for Ukraine conflict resolution, and mega accounts traced to Israel, Nigeria and Russia. The Department of Homeland Security has connections to Israeli operations. Mayor Muriel Bowser questions why National Guard troops from West Virginia were deployed to Washington DC. The suspect had no identification and was identified through fingerprints, refusing to cooperate with authorities. Operation Allies Welcome participants face renewed scrutiny despite FBI background checks and DHS vetting procedures completed under the current administration.
