The Department of Defense Inspector General released a classified report confirming Pete Hegseth compromised sensitive military information when he shared classified Yemen attack plans through the Signal messaging app. The March 2025 incident involved Hegseth transmitting highly sensitive details about Operation Rough Rider, including fighter jet launch locations, weapons systems, missile deployment times, and specific targets against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The classified war plans were shared via Signal chat with cabinet members, JD Vance, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and inadvertently with Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg.
The report confirms Hegseth risked endangering American troops by using a hackable communication platform to discuss classified military operations before strikes occurred. Signal chat messages included aircraft types, missile specifications, and attack timing that could have reached adversaries. Mike Waltz accidentally added Goldberg to the classified chat, leading to public exposure when the Atlantic published transcripts. The investigation revealed Hegseth also shared Yemen missile strike details in a second Signal group including his wife, brother, and lawyer, none of whom held appropriate security clearances.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe mentioned an active undercover officer's name in the communications. The Inspector General found that while the Defense Secretary has declassification authority, no documentation exists showing Hegseth made an operational decision to declassify the Yemen bombing plans. Pentagon sources leaked the classified Inspector General report despite Hegseth restricting media access to the Department of Defense. The scandal demonstrates serious information security failures and potential violations of records preservation laws through self-deleting Signal messages containing classified military intelligence.
