Trump issued his first two presidential vetoes targeting Colorado legislation that passed Congress with near-unanimous support. The vetoes blocked a pipeline project bringing clean drinking water to southeastern rural Colorado and protections for Native American land ownership rights. The rural Colorado communities most affected by the water veto are predominantly Trump voters. Reports suggest the vetoes stem from anger at Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert for signing the Epstein Transparency Act discharge petition and frustration over the state's refusal to release Tina Peters from prison. Peters was convicted on state felony charges for attempting to help Trump overturn the 2020 election.
Trump issued a legally ineffective federal pardon for Peters despite having no authority over state convictions. A viral video from MAGA YouTuber Nick Shirley about Somali daycare fraud in Minneapolis has exploded across social media. The cases involve COVID-era fraud dating back three to four years, with approximately 90 people already investigated, tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison terms. The fraud involved PPP loans and pandemic relief programs that many people, including some Republicans in Congress, exploited. The timing of the video's viral spread coincides with Trump's recent rhetoric about Somali immigrants.
The cases have been handled through the legal system for years, but the story resurfaces now checking multiple boxes for Trump supporters: race, immigration status, and fraud allegations. Meanwhile, Trump's own half-billion-dollar fraud liability in New York for bank, wire, and mortgage fraud committed over a decade through the Trump Organization receives no comparable outrage from his base. The contrast highlights issues with media literacy, critical thinking, and the tendency to accept inflammatory content without basic fact-checking or Google searches to verify claims.
