The US-Iran negotiations are in serious trouble, and the reason may be simpler than anyone wants to admit. Iran's negotiating team, experienced in complex nuclear diplomacy, is sitting across the table from Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, two real estate developers with no background in nuclear programs, uranium enrichment, or international arms agreements.
Reports indicate Iran placed an offer on the table before the bombing began, one that Kushner and Witkoff reportedly could not understand because they lacked the technical knowledge to evaluate it. Meanwhile, Kushner has been traveling through the Middle East raising capital for his hedge fund, which currently manages around $6 billion in assets, much of it seeded by Gulf states including Saudi Arabia. At a 1.25% annual management fee, that works out to roughly $75 million a year, paid by the very governments with a stake in how this conflict plays out.
Trump has publicly stated his primary goal is taking Iran's oil, drawing comparisons to the $500 million in Venezuelan oil currently sitting in a Qatar bank account he controls. The plan reportedly involves seizing Qaru Island in the northern Gulf while expecting the US Navy to escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, hundreds of miles to the south. Oil prices topped $116 a barrel overnight. Israel has reportedly signaled it will not participate in any ground invasion of Iran. And gas prices could hit six dollars a gallon by the Fourth of July.
