Dan Bongino resigned from his position as FBI Deputy Director after less than a year serving under Cash Patel. The former podcaster's tenure at the Federal Bureau of Investigation came to an abrupt end following what appears to be a series of clashes with reality. Bongino and Cash Patel both campaigned for years on conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, Jeffrey Epstein client lists, and government cover-ups. Once inside the FBI, both men faced immediate pressure from supporters demanding prosecutions of Robert Mueller, Jack Smith, and January 6 committee members.
The Epstein files became a particular flashpoint. Bongino and Cash Patel had repeatedly claimed Jeffrey Epstein was murdered and that a client list existed showing widespread blackmail operations. After taking their FBI positions, both men appeared on Fox News to walk back these claims, stating no client list exists and that Epstein did take his own life. The breaking point came in July when Attorney General Pam Bondi released an unsigned memorandum closing the Epstein investigation. Reports indicate Bongino had a heated confrontation with Pam Bondi over the Epstein files decision.
The Trump administration's appointments of former podcasters Cash Patel and Dan Bongino to lead the FBI, alongside selections like Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense and RFK Jr as HHS Secretary, represented an unprecedented shift in federal law enforcement leadership. Rank and file FBI agents reportedly celebrated Bongino's departure from the bureau.
