Greg Bovino has been removed from his role as Border Patrol commander and will return to El Centro, California, where he is expected to retire. The firing comes after Border Patrol agents under Bovino's command shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who worked with veterans, in Minneapolis. Bovino's removal signals a potential shift in Trump administration tactics following the fatal shooting Saturday.
Trump spoke with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz about federal operations in Minneapolis, with Tom Homan heading to the state to assume command. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Gnome and adviser Corey Lewandowski, who supported Bovino, may also lose their positions. Bovino became the public face of immigration enforcement operations in Democratic-led cities including Chicago, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Minneapolis.
He traveled with a film crew and became a MAGA social media personality while working outside traditional chain of command. Border Patrol commanders typically avoid political arguments with elected officials, but Bovino engaged directly. After the Alex Pretti shooting, Bovino claimed Border Patrol agents were the victims, stating they faced a would-be assassin. Videos contradicted these claims, showing Pretti, who had a concealed carry license, did not draw his weapon or attack agents.
