as posted by the channelHow Getting Doxed on TikTok Changed Everything (One Year Later) - I didn’t quit
Two and a half years ago, Hawk was doxed on TikTok by followers of another creator, leading to death threats, strangers messaging his home address, and ultimately being fired from his job as a trial attorney. The harassment was relentless, with dozens of videos exposing his real name, face, workplace address, and contact information. People he considered friends on the left turned against him, joining the pile-on after he defended a woman being attacked online. The trauma from the doxing resulted in PTSD and multiple blackout episodes over the following year.
A year ago during Christmas, while on a live stream, one of his main harassers appeared in the comments, triggering a severe PTSD flashback where Hawk blacked out for hours while still conscious and functioning. He has no memory of that time, despite making videos and participating in conversations. That incident became the catalyst for seeking serious help. Hawk spent nine months working with a trauma specialist therapist and participating in an intense men's group. The therapy work has been transformative, helping him heal while simultaneously teaching hard lessons about online friendships, parasocial relationships, and trust.
Despite everything, Hawk refused to quit TikTok, driven partly by stubbornness and partly by refusing to let harassers take away something he enjoyed. This year he achieved major goals: retiring from his attorney career after 27 years, buying his dream home in the mountains, and transitioning to content creation full-time. He also filed an FBI report with 400 videos as evidence, resulting in permanent FBI files for five main harassers. The journey has brought both healing and grief, as the process of setting healthy boundaries caused some relationships to fall away. Hawk reflects on the balance between increased empathy and warranted wariness of strangers online.
