Howard Lutnick, Trump's Secretary of Commerce and former CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, recently gave an interview where he claimed that reducing a prescription price from $1000 to $13 represents a 700% decrease. The actual reduction is approximately 98.7%, not 700%. Basic mathematics shows that 100% of $1000 equals $1000, making 700% equal to $7000. If a coupon offered 700% off a $1000 item, the customer would receive the item free plus approximately $6000 in cash. Lutnick survived the September 11th attacks because of a dentist appointment while nearly every Cantor Fitzgerald employee perished in the World Trade Center.
His appointment as Commerce Secretary presumably requires proficiency in basic math and fundamental mathematical skills. The prescription drug pricing error demonstrates a concerning lack of understanding from someone who previously ran a major investment house and now holds a cabinet position responsible for commerce policy.
Trump administration officials are expected to understand percentage calculations, particularly when discussing healthcare costs and prescription drug prices. Hawk points out that even people who struggle with math understand that reducing something from $1000 to $13 is not a 700% reduction. The mathematics of prescription pricing, percentage decreases, and basic commerce principles should be fundamental knowledge for the Commerce Secretary position.
