Hawk highlights the work of Canadian journalist Rachel Gilmore, who has been reporting extensively on white nationalist organizations, active clubs, and Nazi-affiliated fight clubs operating across Canada. After Gilmore published a piece unmasking members of a white nationalist active club in Montreal, two of the men she exposed showed up at a music venue to intimidate her in person. One of them, Shawn Bove McDonald, has openly identified himself as a Nazi on social media.
The encounter forced Gilmore to rely on hired security, spend hours at a Montreal police station, and face ongoing threats including doxxing, non-consensual sexualized imagery, and deepfakes targeting people close to her. Her partner's music career has been put at risk after neo-Nazis showed up to his events to harass her.
Canada reportedly has a disproportionate number of active clubs, with over 30 of nearly 200 known global chapters operating there, according to an internal government report. These groups recruit and train for what they describe as eventual violent confrontation.
Despite the personal cost, Gilmore points to admissions from active club leadership that social exposure and public unmasking are among the most effective tools against these organizations. The video also addresses how coordinated right-wing media campaigns work to discredit journalists on this beat, making them more vulnerable to real-world threats.
