Six years after COVID shut the world down, the chaos that followed, from Trump's daily briefings to January 6th and the certification of Joe Biden's victory, feels almost quaint compared to what is unfolding now. Many people breathed a sigh of relief when Biden's win was certified in the early hours of January 7th. That relief was premature.
The United States is now engaged in active military conflict with Iran, a nation of 92 million people, while Israel simultaneously wages war on two fronts with a population of just 9 million. Benjamin Netanyahu's own military commanders are warning that the IDF is at its breaking point. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's malignant narcissism means that when cornered, the calculus becomes dangerously unpredictable, and the possibility of nuclear escalation is no longer theoretical.
Iran has already destroyed five US aerial refueling tankers and an AWACS surveillance aircraft parked on a Saudi air base, intelligence that may have come directly from Russia. US radar batteries across Gulf states have been severely degraded. And yet approximately 15,000 American troops are preparing for what may be a ground invasion, likely beginning at Kharg Island, with paratroopers dropping in without adequate air cover or radar support.
The Strait of Hormuz closing for even four or five weeks could bring the global economy to its knees. Markets worldwide face catastrophic disruption. The human cost inside Iran and among US forces could be staggering, and all of it, entirely avoidable.
