TikTok censorship concerns have exploded following the platform's ownership transfer to Larry Ellison and Oracle. The app experienced widespread technical issues including zero view counts, blocked uploads about ICE protests, and restricted direct messages containing certain words. Larry Ellison, Oracle CEO and largest private donor to the Israeli military, now controls TikTok alongside his son David Ellison of Skydance. The TikTok ban legislation passed in March 2024 following October 7th and mounting criticism of Israeli government policies in Gaza.
Palestinian journalists and civilians used TikTok to document conditions in Gaza Strip, leading to what many believe was the real motivation behind the ban. Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League described a "TikTok problem" as content from Palestinian civilians shifted public opinion against Israeli government actions. The platform claims technical glitches from Oracle data center failures caused the issues, but users remain skeptical given the timing of the ownership change. Donald Trump joked about making the algorithm 100% MAGA, while media consolidation under Trump-friendly billionaires accelerates.
Bisan, a prominent Palestinian civilian journalist, received a permanent ban just days after the ownership transfer. Questions persist about whether TikTok now functions as a proxy for Israeli government interests rather than Chinese surveillance. The shadow banning panic reflects broader concerns about censorship, algorithm manipulation, and the consolidation of social media platforms under billionaire control aligned with specific political agendas.
