Five years after the Capitol attack, the events of January 6th 2021 remain a defining moment in American democracy. Donald Trump directed supporters to storm the Capitol in an effort to overturn the 2020 election, launching multiple criminal conspiracies from the Oval Office. The insurrection represented more than an attempt to overturn election results. It exposed tens of millions of Americans willing to abandon constitutional republic principles for authoritarian rule. Merrick Garland and the DOJ investigated the rioters but waited 20 months before examining those responsible for orchestrating the attack.
Jack Smith eventually indicted Trump on four felony counts related to stealing the 2020 election. The January 6 committee documented the conspiracy, yet right-wing media immediately rewrote the narrative. Despite 91 indictments across four jurisdictions, including cases in Georgia and DC for trying to overturn the 2020 election, and 34 felony convictions in the Manhattan case, American voters chose Trump again. Benjamin Franklin warned the founders about keeping the republic. The country demonstrated that millions no longer want democratic governance. For Trump, those three hours watching violence unfold on his behalf represented true power.
His lies motivated thousands to commit violence and attempt overturning an election. Even after supporters failed and Trump refused pardons during his final two weeks in office, voters gave him another chance. Farmers who suffered economically during his first term voted for him again, receiving the same treatment.
