Kash Patel fired a dozen FBI agents from CI12, the bureau's elite counter intelligence unit specializing in Iran, foreign espionage, Middle Eastern terror networks, Cuba, and classified document mishandling. Patel claimed the agents engaged in improper investigative steps during the Mar-a-Lago classified documents investigation, despite the fact that a federal judge signed the warrant and FBI agents do not choose their own cases.
The gutting of CI12 happened just days before Trump launched bombing strikes on Iran that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. CI12 was the very unit responsible for tracking Iranian threats on American soil, including the 2019 indictment of Monica Witt, a former U.S. Air Force intelligence specialist who defected and began spying for Iran.
After Trump ordered the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani during his first term, Iran launched assassination operations targeting Trump, John Bolton, and Mike Pompeo. Despite credible, confirmed threats against Bolton and Pompeo's lives from the Iranian government, Trump stripped them of their Secret Service protection because they had publicly criticized him.
The FBI reported a 35% increase in counter intelligence arrests in 2025, captured six of the ten most wanted fugitives, and foiled multiple terrorism plots in December alone. Pam Bondi and Kash Patel are dismantling the infrastructure that produced those results.
