What followed exposed a disturbing pattern across America's most powerful institutions. Major law firms with century-long reputations as elite litigators received executive orders from Trump and immediately capitulated. These trial attorneys who defend the Constitution in courtrooms chose partnership profits over principles. Only four law firms refused to comply, took Trump to court, and won resounding victories at both trial and appellate levels.
Universities with billion-dollar endowments folded without resistance. Twitter and Facebook each paid Trump $20 million in meritless defamation lawsuits. ABC Disney paid $16 million for the George Stephanopoulos case despite having no legal basis. CBS News 60 Minutes followed suit. None of these defamation lawsuits had merit as a matter of law, yet corporations with massive resources chose settlement over litigation. Meanwhile, Kilmar Obrego Garcia, who spent four months at Secot prison enduring brutal physical assault, sexual assault, and torture, stood up to Trump's government without those resources. His legal team fought back and won, securing his release and a court order preventing future detention. Andre Jose Romero Hernandez, the gay hairdresser and makeup artist, suffered the same treatment at CECOT prison.
These individuals showed more courage than billion-dollar corporations and prestigious law firms combined, proving that resistance against autocracy and authoritarianism remains possible when people refuse to bend the knee for convenience or fear.
