Martin Short recently opened up about losing his daughter Katherine to suicide, sharing that mental illness, like his late wife Nan's cancer, can be a terminal disease. His words hit close to home for Hawk, who shares his own deeply personal experience with suicidal ideation at two separate points in his life.

On Christmas Eve 2001, Hawk was sitting alone in the attic of a farmhouse in Mansfield, Ohio, with a loaded .38 in his mouth, hammer cocked. What stopped him was the thought of his brother Falcon, and then his 16-year-old yellow lab, Oscar, who somehow climbed those stairs and sat down right in front of him, tail wagging. That moment led to a cross-country drive with his brother and a completely new life beginning in San Francisco in 2002.

Hawk speaks honestly about the psychology of suicidal thinking, including the belief that ending one's own life is not an act of selfishness but an act of love for the people being left behind. He reflects on what it must feel like for Martin Short as a parent to understand that his daughter believed she was doing something for him.

The conversation around mental health, borderline personality disorder, suicide loss, and breaking the silence is one that touches nearly every family. Hawk shares his truth to make sure no one feels alone in theirs. Years of therapy and a full second life in California are proof that the story does not have to end.
