The statistics tell a damning story: four discharge petitions have been approved this year alone. For context, only five discharge petitions were approved in the previous 30 years combined. Discharge petitions represent the caucus forcing the Speaker to act against his wishes, demonstrating that Republican House members wield more power than their own leader. This pattern reveals Mike Johnson as potentially the weakest Speaker in 50 years.
Working with only a three-seat majority that will shrink to two seats after January, Johnson faces enormous challenges. Republican morale in the House of Representatives has collapsed completely. The situation is so dire that Democrats could potentially take control before the midterm elections, simply through Republican departures and defections. The caucus dysfunction stems largely from Johnson's subservient relationship with Donald Trump, who openly joked that he essentially holds both the presidency and the speakership.
