The hot mic moment catching Speaker Mike Johnson celebrating reduced voter turnout is not a shocking revelation. It is the same voter suppression playbook Republicans have been running openly for decades, and the receipts are everywhere.
Going back to Wisconsin in 2016, Congressman Glenn Grothman tied voter ID laws directly to winning elections, not election integrity. A Republican staffer named Todd Al testified under oath that GOP legislative leaders were giddy at the prospect of strict voter ID laws keeping minority voters and young voters away from the polls. In Pennsylvania, State Representative Mike Turzai said voter ID laws would hand Mitt Romney the state. In Florida, Senator Mike Bennett argued voting was simply too easy. Former Heritage Foundation head Jim DeMint acknowledged these laws were shifting elections toward Republican candidates.
The pattern is unmistakable across multiple states and multiple years. These laws consistently targeted young voters, minority voters, urban voters, college students, and anyone less likely to have specific required IDs or the flexibility to navigate new restrictions. The goal was never fraud prevention. The goal was shaping who shows up. With the SAVE Act and Republican strategy heading into 2026, the midterms are shaping up to be a critical test of whether free and fair elections still mean something.
