14:16Now PlayingWhat Are the Historical Parallels to What is Happening in the United States Right Now?
White Americans are confronting a reality in January 2026 that black, brown, and Native American communities have long understood: a government willing to normalize violence against its own citizens. Minneapolis has become an unexpected battleground, much like Gettysburg in 1863, where neither side planned the engagement but both became fully committed once it began. The Trump regime invaded Minneapolis, facing unexpected resistance not from politicians or institutions, but from ordinary people using cell phones and whistles to document federal forces' actions. When Renee Good was murdered by masked secret police and Alex Pretti was executed in broad daylight, the stakes became undeniable.
Jonathan V. Last from The Bulwark draws powerful parallels between the Civil War battle and today's Minneapolis situation. Just as neither army at Gettysburg understood they were fighting the defining engagement of the war, participants today may not fully grasp the historical significance of this moment. The people of Minneapolis organized grassroots resistance, providing oversight that state and local law enforcement could not or would not perform. They faced violence, arrests, and death for protecting their neighbors.
Democratic leadership in the House has advised members not to go to Minneapolis, but Ilhan Omar stands with her district while Hakeem Jeffries and others remain absent. House Democrats should be on the streets with cameras, bodies on the line, standing in solidarity with Minneapolis residents. Senate Democrats must shut off funding for regime forces. The people of Minneapolis gave everything and need reinforcements from the broader resistance. This fight against American fascism requires understanding that radical action is now pragmatic action. Timothy Snyder calls for impeachment, disbanding ICE and Homeland Security, and bringing killers before judges and juries. The violence follows a totalitarian logic of lies and lawlessness.
The Ulma family story from 1942 Poland reminds us what courage looks like: sheltering Jewish families despite Nazi threats, resulting in the execution of all 17 people including six children. Alex Pretti's final act was helping a woman pushed down by border patrol agents before his death. Seeing God's image in others means being a Good Samaritan, helping people stand up when pushed down, offering shelter when there's room.
